Familiars are defined to me as a personal demon, based on an altar ego of oneself in another plane of existence, used to assist and work alongside it's magical partner: it's witch. Though, even though they are there to asist you, they also have their own life and existence, and shouldn't be treated as a pet and also shouldn't be neglected.
DISCLAIMER: Your pet can not be your familiar naturally, unless you want to possess them with the entity of your familiar- which I would find rude as your pets have their own personality and should be cared for as themselves. Though, if you'd truly like your pet to be possessed by your familiar, you may do so.
Taking Care Of Your Familiar:
Once a week, after summoning and creation of your familiar (either possessing an object or animal) you should feed them offerings. First, you must contact your familiar and meditate in order to feel a connection, and then ask what they would like to be given. Some may request a blood link, which is when one pricks their finger or draws blood to give to their familiar. This can be in a bowl, pouch attached by either a collar or wrapped around an object, or inside an object.
Losing Contact With Your Familiar:
Losing connection with your familiar can result from neglect and mistreatment of your familiar, or the demon you chose to create your familiar with. This means they can create their own purpose seperate from your own, and can disobey your requests. When this happens, you can banish your familiar and destroy them.
